Sam McGuffie, RB, Michigan

Sam McGuffie was an American Football Running Back. McGuffie played his High School football at Cy-Fair High School in Texas, it was there that he was a pioneer and was one of the first high school football players to put together a personal “highlight reel” and post it on YouTube. In High School, McGuffie compiled 699 carries for 5,847 yards with 83 touchdowns. He was most known for “hurdling” over his opponents. The highlight reel earned him National attention from schools like, Notre Dame, Cal, Michigan, Texas A&M and USC.

Sam McGuffie Pioneered the Highlight YouTube Video

McGuffie ultimately decided to commit to Coach Carr and the Michigan Wolverines, however, prior to his Freshman season, Carr retired, and the University of Michigan hired Rich Rodriguez. Sam debated on switching commitments before National Signing Day but ultimately decided to remain true to his word and signed with Michigan.

McGuffie started as a True Freshman, and scored his first TD in the opening season loss to Utah that year. The next week against Notre Dame he had a breakout game that saw him rush for 131 yards. He also had 47 receiving yards and a TD. His career never really took off at Michigan, unfortunately due to suffering 3 concussions in that first season. He chose not to return to Michigan for his Sophomore season.

During the offseason, Sam transferred to Rice University in Texas to be closer to home. In his Sophomore season he was the 3rd best running back in C-USA, and was one of 3 players in all of the FBS to gain at least 850 rushing yards and 350 receiving yards. Unfortunately again, Sam’s season was cut short d/t being injury prone. He missed the last five games of the season. During his Junior year, he switched positions to wide receiver. His first season at receiver he caught 54 passes for 603 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Sam’s NFL career never got started, he was undrafted in 2013 and signed to the Raiders practice squad. He was released and spent time with the Cardinals and Patriots practice squads. Following being released by the Patriots, McGuffie spent time in the CFL, with the Winnipeg Bombers, never seeing any playing time.

McGuffie participated in the 2015 and 2018 Men’s Olympic Bobsled team. Currently Sam works in the greater Houston area as a Medical Device Salesman.
