Blue Jays catcher… I mean, Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen made history yesterday as the first player in Major League history to play in the same game for both teams. This occurred because Jansen was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays when the game began on June 26th. The game was suspended due to rain in the 2nd inning. Even crazier, it was suspended during Jansen’s first at-bat. On July 27th, Jansen was traded to the Red Sox. This created the possibility for history to be made yesterday. On the afternoon of August 26th, the game was resumed in the 2nd inning with one strike against Jansen. The Blue Jays had to insert a pinch hitter because Danny no longer plays for the team. The Red Sox inserted him at catcher for the remainder of the game. Quite a few other substitutions had to be made because both rosters have changed quite a bit over the last two months, but none of them were as crazy as Danny Jansen playing in the same game for both teams. All of the stats count on June 26th, so Jansen has stats as a member of the Red Sox before he was actually a member of the team. Jansen ended up with a line of 0 for 0 as a Blue Jay in the game and a line of 1 for 4 as a Red Sock. It’s interesting to think of the possibilities that we could see in the future, even though this doesn’t happen often.
